Hello Acadia Article May 2016

Article published in Hello Acadia for April 2016 by gardener and writer, Joanne Klein:

Hello Acadia article for May 2016:

It may not be an actual jungle out there, but it might as well be.

Animals, including humans, have it easy. Most of us have legs or some other method of propulsion. If we’re attacked, we respond with movement. Plants don’t have the same luxury. If they’re attacked, they have to resort to things like chemical warfare or the deployment of insect armies in order to retaliate. Actually, we humans may have more in common with plants than originally thought.

Multicultural Upick beds

Multicultural Upick Beds – Growing Together

The theme this year is the Philippines! We are excited to start researching plants that might grow in both Calgary and the Philippines, and ideas of what can be grown in Calgary as substitutes for plants commonly found in Philippine cooking. We also are collecting trivia, history, recipes, etc on all things Filipino to share on social media, our community bulletin board and website.  If you have ideas, thoughts, tidbits to share please send them toinfo@growingacadia.ca  or join in the conversations that will be starting on social media.  We are also looking for volunteers to maintain these community upick beds.

Call For Board: Treasurer

Treasurer position: Do you love numbers? Would you have a bit of spare time to share with the garden board?

The Acadia Community Garden and Art Society has an opening on the board for the position of Treasurer.

It’s accounting on an excel spreadsheet with 20-30 transactions for the full year. It’ s writing cheques for garden expenses, depositing donations/payments at our bank in Acadia, reconciling the bank statement, make a short report of the months expenses/income at the casual monthly board meeting, and preparation of the annual treasurer’s report including income statement and balance sheet.

There is lots of help if you have questions / concerns and an audit team to help with the annual report. Please contact info@growingacadia.ca if you are interested in learning more about this vital role and would like to join our dynamic and passionate board.

April is “Save your Pop Bottles/Cans for the Garden” Month!

Please consider helping the garden raise money for insurance, the pollinator garden development and raised beds by saving your refundable bottles/cans for the garden.

Please ask your friends and neighbours to help out too! You can drop off the bottles/cans at the May 7th Sign Raising event from 9 am – 12 noon or contact info@growingacadia.ca for other arrangements. If you like you can bring your refundable into the bottle depot and drop off a money donation to the garden on May 7th.

Your help & support are greatly appreciated!
