Rentals

Welcome to the Acadia Community Garden & Art Society!

Interested in renting a Raised Bed for the 2022 season? Wonderful!

We’ll tell you all about the benefits of joining this great community.

Whether you’re brand new to gardening or a seasoned professional, you’ll find a home at the Garden. We have beds in many sizes and are planning to install standing & wheelchair accessible beds early in the season. By planting time, everything should be ready to go.

Psst: want to help us with this? Reach out to volunteer@growingacadia.ca.

We use no chemical fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, or herbicides. Instead, our renters work with materials such as compost, mulch, and natural predators to nurture plants and control pests & disease. We encourage all of our gardeners to learn more about the beneficial bugs & pollinators that we host in Calgary. We also keep a good number of native plants in our Pollinator Garden and create homes for mason bees within the Food Forest. Keeping a healthy ecosystem is very important to us.

Our irrigation system is provided by City Parks and we have 4 spigots spaced throughout the Garden. There is a substantial compost system which is cared for by all the gardeners & volunteers under the direction of the Compost Committee. Hoses, tools, and other odds & ends are kept in our nearby Garden Shed. Unfortunately, our Garden shed is not yet accessible to those who require wheeled mobility aids but we’re actively working on remedying that. A fundraising initiative has been undertaken to replace our current shed with something more suitable. If you’re interested in supporting that project, either by volunteering or with a financial donation, please contact president@growingacadia.ca.

Within the Garden, you’ll find a Community U-Pick Food Forest full of fruit-bearing trees, shrubs, and vines. We also keep a number of Community U-Pick vegetable & herb beds, a strawberry bed, and a raspberry patch. Once ripe, we encourage everyone to taste the bounty out of these shared spaces. Privately rented beds, of course, are off-limits to casual picking.

Our Garden is large and takes a great deal of work to maintain. Each renter is required to sign up for (unpaid) work shifts to assist with the common chores. Tasks such as weeding, watering, mowing, administrative work, etc… will be set out by the Volunteer Coordinator who will reach out to each renter with instructions. Given that the Garden is entirely volunteer run, this is critical to keeping the Garden operational.
